Why this petition matters
Background Info
People of Waitaki, our drinking water is in danger of having fluoride chemicals added to it. Our health is at stake, and our individual right to refuse ‘medical treatments.’
The Waitaki Council had been directed to add fluoride chemicals to our water by June 2024. The High Court recently found the directive was unlawful because it failed to consider the NZ Bill of Rights s11 – Everyone has the right to decline any medical treatment. However - there remains a high risk the Ministry of Health will give a new directive to fluoridate in future.
There is now strong evidence that, even at the intended dilutions:
• fluoride is a neurotoxin that reduces IQ when exposed in utero;
• it can diminish bone strength and increase the risk of fractures;
• it is an endocrine disruptor, affecting thyroid function;
• there are many other health risks with some people at more risk than
others – babies in utero, bottle-fed infants, those with kidney disease, allergies, dental fluorosis etc;
• swallowing fluoride doesn’t even stop cavities – to harden teeth it must be applied to the teeth topically (toothpaste).

Now is the time to act! We must tell the Waitaki Council loud and clear that our community does not want fluoride in our water, now or in the future. Let’s keep fluoride OUT of our water!
Petition to Keep Fluoride out of Waitaki’s Water
We, the undersigned residents of Waitaki, petition the Waitaki District Council to:
- stop all plans to add fluoride chemicals to our water - the directive to do so was held to be unlawful by the High Court;
- acknowledge that the Council is there to serve our local community (not central government bureaucrats) and that we each have the right to refuse “medical treatments” (NZ Bill of Rights Act 1990 and Local Government Act 2002); and
- if any future directive is received, first hold a full public forum for the presentation of evidence and consideration of our options.
