Why this petition matters

Started by EmojiMe

Did you know that while there are 3,100+ emojis in the world, there’s just 1 emoji meant to represent millions of hijabis? Even cats have 9!

That one emoji was only added in 2017 after a campaign led by Rayouf Alhumedhi, who while chatting in a group with her friends, realised that in a world where more than 92% of people use emojis to communicate globally, there was not a single emoji representing her.

Rayouf Alhumedhi walked, so we could run. And we know that hijabis are more than the scarf that they wear. As individuals spread across the globe, raised in different cultures, with limitless emotions and personalities, one emoji is not enough for hijabis to communicate authentically and express effortlessly.

Our goal is to change this story. It’s time to Rejoice in hijabi individuality by adding more genuine inclusivity to this visual vocabulary.

A single step in the right direction can get the world to #SeeBeyondTheHijab, and foster inclusivity and tolerance towards the global Muslim community.

We need your support to sign this petition so we can take it to the Unicode Consortium and make it happen.
