Musi river flows through the Hyderabad city by touching across important places like High Court, Hospitals, Bus stands and densely populated residential areas. Thus, the people of Telangana, especially the ones who reside in Hyderabad city are getting affected by Musi River waters because of the following reasons.
1. How the Musi River water is getting polluted ?
⦁ There are about 54 Naala's from hyderabad and sec-bad carrying drain (sewage) / domestic water join in the Musi river
⦁ The Sewage / drainage contains organic, in organic , toxic and hazardous wastes(in small concentrations)
⦁ In addition to this, the industrial waste waters from IDA(Industrial Development Area) Uppal,Patan cheruvu, Jeedimetla,... are dumped into Musi river.
⦁ The industrial wastes contain very Toxic and hazardous wastes like heavy metals, phenols , surfactants(Soaps) , synthetic organic Substance (pesticides fungicides) .... etc
2. Heavy metal presence in crops like wheat, rice and vegetables:
⦁ Yes there are reports (research), which say that cadmium zinc chromium from industrial effluents are present in micro quantities.
⦁ But these concentrations are variable and seasonal no exact data available. But there are evidences.
3. Milk related issues:
⦁ The downstream of Musi covers almost 20 to 30 villages from Pratapsingaram, Parvathapur to Suryapet.
⦁ On the banks of Musi, abundant growth of grass is seen( visible) and which is mostly used as cattle feed.
⦁ Few reports say that the cow milk contains small concentrations of DDT (Pesticide) and other fungicides etc,.
⦁ See few reports, which are attached. (pollution in Enkiryal village, Surapalli village and Aroor village)
4. Air Pollution:
⦁ The Musi river problem is mainly water pollution.
⦁ However the vapors, odours from Musi down dtream gives a specific smell(Un breathables)
⦁ The Copper wires, Coatings in automobile are getting damaged & destroyed.
⦁ The Aldrops(door bolts, nuts , lockers) (windows bolts) are changing the colour, especially bronze , copper materials.
5. Soil Productivity reduction due to Musi usage in agriculture:
⦁ Yes, there is definite reduction in crop yield, fruit yield, flower yield
⦁ Live stock - poultry - reduction.
⦁ Reports are attached
6. Diseases due to Musi River water :
⦁ Skin Problems
⦁ Eye sight related issues.
⦁ vomiting in (particular infants) Season, monsoon.
⦁ Refer the attached report.
7. Pollutants(Possible) Present in Musi river:
⦁ Colour - turbidity
⦁ TDS (Total Dissolved solids)
⦁ pH, Electric conductivity , hardness
⦁ BOD,( Bio-Chemical Oxygen Demand)
⦁ COD (Chemical Oxygen Demand)
⦁ Nitrates - nitrites
⦁ Carbonates - Bi- Carbonates
⦁ Sulphates - Chlorides
⦁ Potassium- Calcium
⦁ Magnesium - Sodium
8. Other Disturbance due to Musi:
⦁ Deposition of the metals, organics, toxic substances at the (Bottom level (1- 1.5meters deep))
⦁ Percolation , Penetration of those organic pollutants phenols, metals in to surface water and ground water and underground water (in wells , bore wells , hand pumps)
⦁ Handloom industry faces big threat
⦁ Few cottage industries on the banks of Musi river(in small villages) eg:- Pottery(changing clear colour and structure )
⦁ Dairy industry problems due to cow milk contamination - changing curd and butter quality -colour change -taste differences.
