Why this petition matters

CHAPS urges Butler County Metroparks to allow the historic Hueston farmhouse to be preserved. Built in 1874, the two-story clapboard farmhouse was restored by Ann Antenen in 1982. The home sits on the 132-acre Antenen Preserve, a property donated to Metroparks by the Antenen family in 1996. The preserve is now managed as part of Four Mile Creek Metropark. CHAPS, via the Antenen family, has been made aware that Metroparks has imminent plans to demolish the historic home.

Members of the Hueston and Antenen families, and other local preservationists, would like to see the home saved. As Metroparks does not believe that restoring the home is part of its mission, we propose that the home be made available via sale or long-term ground lease for private individual(s) to restore as a residence. As the home is located near the roadway and entrance to the preserve, a small parcel can be carved out to accommodate the home while still preserving 130+ acres of parkland for the public.

A private-funded restoration is a win-win for Metroparks, those who want to save the house, and taxpayers. The home can be restored and begin to generate new tax revenue for St. Clair Township, New Miami Local School District, Butler County, and other taxing districts. Metroparks would be relieved of maintenance and/or demolition costs. Finally, the public will continue to enjoy the park and understand the connection to the Hueston family history.

Metroparks, we urge creativity and patience.
