Why this petition matters
Dear Mr. Gelb,
No sooner had Russian missiles begun flying over Ukraine than a giant Ukrainian flag was unfurled at the Metropolitan Opera and a benefit concert for Ukraine took place on its stage, thanks to you and your principled position. For more than half a year our land has been scarred by the brutality of war, but we feel unprecedented support for Ukraine and Ukrainian culture, especially from the Met, and for this we are sincerely and immensely grateful. We thank you for inviting Ukraine’s most illustrious soprano, Liudmyla Monatyrska, to sing the title role in Turandot, including a live HD broadcast to cinemas around the world. Owing to your Herculean efforts and invaluable support, Keri-Lynn Wilson was able to form the Ukrainian Freedom Orchestra and lead a triumphant tour of Europe and the United States. Music lovers not fortunate enough to attend in person were able to enjoy their performances thanks to telecasts on Arte, the BBC and PBS. We hope that the Metropolitan Opera will become home to even more Ukrainian voices.
There are many more brilliant Ukrainian artists performing in Ukraine today. Despite the war, theaters in Ukraine continue to present performances, providing beauty and light in these harsh times. Sadly, our cities are still under threat from Russian missiles, and air-raid sirens can interrupt an opera mid-aria. Audiences and artists are forced to take shelter underground, but once the alarm ends, the performance continues. Such is the reality of artistic life in Kyiv, Odesa and Lviv today. However, art cannot be stopped with rockets, Ukrainian stages will not be silenced, and art must live on, in any circumstances.
Conductor Alla Kulbaba is among those continuing to bring music to Ukraine in the face of danger. Recognized as a People’s Artist of Ukraine, she is a graduate of the National Music Academy of Ukraine and has worked as a conductor of the National Opera of Ukraine since 1995. Under her authoritative direction the orchestra plays as a single harmonious organism, conveying the smallest nuances of mood. Owing to her skill, each soloist and the entire choir can be heard subtly and precisely. Her repertoire includes more than 30 productions, including Cimarosa’s Il matrimonio segreto, Rossini’s Il barbiere di Siviglia and La Cenerentola, Bellini’s Norma, Donizetti’s L’elisir d’amore, Verdi’s Nabucco, Macbeth, Rigoletto, Il trovatore, La traviata and Aida, Gounod’s Faust and Roméo et Juliette, and Puccini’s Manon Lescaut, Madama Butterfly, and Tosca. With the National Opera of Ukraine, she has toured Japan, Belgium, Denmark, Germany, and the Netherlands. In May 2022 she conducted a new production of Tosca at the Croatian National Theater in Zagreb. We hope that someday New York audiences will have the opportunity to enjoy her art as much as we do in Kyiv.
Tenor Oleg Zlakoman fills Ukrainian opera houses to capacity whenever he performs. An Honored Artist of Ukraine, he studied at the Kyiv University of Culture and the Arts and the Odesa National Music Academy and has been a soloist of the Odesa Opera House since 2007. His performances as Pollione in Norma, Edgardo in Lucia di Lammermoor, the Duke in Rigoletto, Manrico in Il trovatore, Alfredo in La traviata, Radames in Aida, Rodolfo in La bohème, Cavaradossi in Tosca, Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly, Calaf in Turandot and Turridu in Cavalleria rusticana are acclaimed throughout Ukraine. Possessing a heroic, clarion voice with a powerful top, as well as lyrical cantilena, he performs regularly in Kyiv, Kharkiv, Lviv, at the National Opera of Moldova and with the Astana Opera. He has sung at the Teatro Ciudad de Marbella, Teatre Principal de Maó, Teatro Romano de Malaga, Stadsschouwburg Antwerpen and Zuiderstrandtheater Den Haag.
Basso cantante Sergey Kovnir, admired for his vocal technique, excellent diction and acting skills, brings his velvety, resonant voice to each of his insightful and finely calibrated performances. An Honored Artist of Ukraine, he graduated from the National Music Academy of Ukraine and has been a soloist of the National Opera of Ukraine since 2003. His repertoire includes the Commendatore in Don Giovanni, Don Basilio in Il barbiere di Siviglia, Alidoro in La Cenerentola, Oroveso in Norma, Raimondo in Lucia di Lammermoor, Zaccaria in Nabucco, Banco in Macbeth, Sparafucile in Rigoletto, Ferrando in Il trovatore, Filippo in Don Carlo, the Pharaoh in Aida, Méphistophélès in Faust, Alviso in La Gioconda, Colline in La bohème, Angelotti in Tosca, the Bonze in Madama Butterfly and Timur in Turandot, as well as the bass solo parts in the Mozart and Verdi Requiems. Kovnir has toured Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark, Italy, Spain, Portugal, France, Austria, and Japan, and has appeared with the Latvian National Opera, the Kiel Opera House, and the Gärtnerplatztheater in Munich. In October 2018 he performed Zaccaria in Nabucco at the Teatro San Carlo. In December 2018 he sang Dikoj in Káťa Kabanová there, a performance that was livestreamed by OperaVision.

Коли над Україною розліталися російські ракети, а на лінії фронту точилися безперервні бої, завдяки вам і вашій чіткій позиції на сцені Метрополітен опера вперше розгорнули український прапор, а сам найбільший оперний осередок світу першим у Нью-Йорку організував концерт на підтримку України. Попри жорстоку війну, яка вже понад пів року триває на нашій землі, ми відчуваємо безпрецедентну підтримку України й української культури, яку МЕТ висловлює своєю потужною мистецькою зброєю. Ми добре знаємо, що мистецька зброя – найпотужніший HIMARS цієї війни, і щиро вдячні вам за таку підтримку. Ви запросили зірку української опери Людмилу Монастирську виконати партію Турандот, а представників ООН – на цю виставу, організували її запис на HD. Саме за підтримки Метрополітен опера був створений Український оркестр свободи, у складі якого наші музиканти відкривали українську культуру світові під час тріумфального турне фестивалями Європи й Америки.
Хотіли б розповісти про блискучих українських митців, які також могли би стати голосом України на сцені МЕТ. Поки в їхній країні не почалася повномасштабна війна, вони успішно гастролювали в різних країнах світу, а сьогодні продовжують дарувати своє мистецтво з українських сцен. Адже попри війну оперні театри в Україні працюють і продовжують наповнювати добром і світлом душі тисяч глядачів, що так тягнуться до прекрасного в ці суворі часи. Сигнали повітряних тривог сьогодні можуть увірватися посеред спектаклю або брутально обірвати арію, бо російські ракети знову загрожують українським містам. Тоді глядачі й артисти спускаються в укриття, але після відбою тривоги вистава продовжується. Такі реалії мистецьких буднів Києва, Одеси чи Львова сьогодні. Але мистецтво не спинити ракетами. Українські сцени не мовчатимуть – мистецтво має жити. За будь-яких умов.
Понад 30 оперних і балетних вистав у репертуарі чарівної диригентки Національної опери України (Київ), народної артистки України Алли Кульбаби. Ця тендітна жінка легким помахом руки здатна перенести глядача у прекрасний світ Верді, Пуччіні, Белліні чи Россіні. Як єдиний злагоджений організм працює її оркестр, передаючи найменші відтінки настрою твору так, немовби вони відкриваються тільки для тебе. Для її диригентської палички немає таємниць, вона – найделікатніший провідник задуму композитора у нашому світі. Тому так тонко й точно ми чуємо і кожного соліста, і цілий хор, коли за пультом Алла Кульбаба. Із колективом Національної опери України та як запрошений диригент вона з успіхом гастролювала в Японії, Бельгії, Данії, Німеччині, Нідерландах, США. У травні 2022 року вона керувала новою постановкою «Тоски» в Хорватському національному театрі в Загребі. Віримо, що одного прекрасного дня диригентське перо Маестро Кульбаби злетить над пультом найбільшої оперної сцени світу – і глядачі Нью-Йорка отримають таку ж насолоду від її мистецтва, як і ми в Києві.
Оперний театр незмінно збирає повні зали, коли провідні партії в ньому виконує тенор, заслужений артист України, соліст Одеської опери Олег Злакоман – будь то в Одесі, Києві чи Львові. Його переконливі Радамес, Калаф, Каварадоссі (провідні партії в операх Верді «Аїда», Пуччіні – «Турандот» і «Тоска») справедливо набули загальноукраїнського визнання. Вони зачаровують від першої ноти і міцно тримають на своїй орбіті всіх і кожного в залі, а знамените VINCEEEEERO щоразу порушує закони гравітації і підносить до небес.
Стихія голосу вирує і генерує найтонші відчуття від партій Олега в «Трубадурі» Верді, «Нормі» Белліні, «Богемі» Пуччіні (Манріко, Полліон, Рудольф). Його Альфред і Герцог («Травіата», «Ріголетто» Верді), Пінкертон («Мадам Баттерфляй» Пуччіні), Едгардо («Лючія ді Ламмермур» Доніцетті) і Турріду («Сільська честь» Масканьї) – загалом до 15 провідних партій у класичних оперних творах – неодмінно зачіпають найтонші струни глядацьких душ і щоразу звучать по-новому. Потужний, насичений унікальними барвами голос Олега звучав у національних оперних театрах Одеси і Києва, Харкова й Астани, Львова й Кишинева, на гастролях в Іспанії, Бельгії та Нідерландах (Teatro Ciudad de Marbella, Teatre Principal de Mao, Teatro Romano de Malaga, Stadsschouwburg Antverpen, Zuiderstrandtheater Den Haag). 2018 року Олег Злакоман виконав партію Радамеса у легендарній постановці театру La Scala видатного режисера Франко Дзефіреллі в Астані (Казахстан).
Кожна нота резонує в душах глядачів, коли свої коронні партії виконує бас, заслужений артист України, соліст Національної опери (м.Київ) Сергій Ковнір. Його математично вивірені, чіткі до блиску і такі проникливі герої – Філіп ІІ, Захарія («Дон Карлос», «Набукко» Верді), Мефістофель («Фауст» Гуно), Дон Базіліо («Севільський цирульник» Россіні), Оровез («Норма» Белліні) і Командор («Дон Жуан» Моцарта) вражають і бентежать. Кожен його герой – Спарафучіле і Феррандо («Ріголетто» і «Трубадур» Верді), Раймондо («Лючія ді Ламмермур» Доніцетті), Тимур («Турандот» Пуччіні) і чимало інших – загалом до 30 партій – звучить як справжнє одкровення й не залишає місця сумнівам. Сергій Ковнір з успіхом гастролював у Німеччині, Латвії, Бельгії, Данії, Італії, Іспанії, Португалії, Франції та інших країнах.
Ми пишаємося місією, яку виконує МЕТ у захисті української культури під час війни проти російської навали, щиро вдячні за вашу принципову позицію і сприймаємо ваш величний театр як активну частину Сполучених Штатів – країни, без якої ми не святкували б нині незалежність України. Маємо надію, що сцена МЕТ стане потужною підтримкою для українських голосів. Переконані, що сьогодні на культурному фронті Метрополітен опера на українській стороні – стороні правди – і всі разом ми неодмінно переможемо!
