On August 23 2021, the B.C government announced that there will be a vaccine passport introduced for residents who want to attend sporting events or visit restaurants, among other non essential activities. This vaccine passport will be implemented on September 13th and will apply to what the province calls “a broad range of social, recreational, and discretionary events and businesses" A vaccine passport is not the way forward for British Columbia and will only exacerbate existing health inequalities in our province and further divide people between "the vaccinated" and "the unvaccinated". John Horgan the B.C premier and prime minister Justin Trudeau both said as much a few months ago. Vaccine passports have no place in a free and democratic society that values equality before the law and the right to personal privacy. There are other ways to limit the spread of Covid for the duration of the public health emergency such as continued mask mandates and social distancing guidelines; a vaccine passport is an extreme overreach and is akin to medical apartheid. There are many public health workers and departments across B.C and across Canada who oppose vaccine passports but they have been sidelined and their concerns have been ignored. I am extremely disappointed that this the is path forward that our government has decided on and I hope concerned citizens and the B.C Civil Liberties Association among others will join forces in promoting my petition and stopping this vaccine passport mandate and having it thrown out in court. I write this petition not as a "covid denier" or "anti vaxxer" but as a concerned Canadian citizen who is standing up for our rights and for medical equality. The very fact that it is illegal in Canada to force an individual to disclose their medical history gives me hope that the planned vaccine mandate will be dead on arrival and thrown out in court, but that is by no means guaranteed and it is up to us the people to stand up and assert our medical sovereignty and reject vaccine passports for British Columbia.
