Why this petition matters

Started by Lairen Ginn

As someone who has experienced the unfairness of school policies firsthand, I am calling for a change. Students are often punished for defending themselves during altercations, even when they are not the instigators. This is not only unjust but also infringes on their right to self-defense.

However, it's crucial to acknowledge that some individuals may misuse the concept of self-defense or provoke fights under its guise. Therefore, we propose a comprehensive policy that includes steps to prevent such misuse while ensuring students' safety.

The first step should be verbal de-escalation. Encouraging students to resolve conflicts through dialogue can significantly reduce physical confrontations. Next, if verbal de-escalation fails and escape is impossible, non-violent means such as blocking or restraining should be employed before resorting to violent defense.

Violent self-defense should only be used as a last resort when all other options have failed and personal safety is at risk. If a student retaliates immediately without attempting these steps first, then punishment for fighting could be justified.

According to the National Center for Education Statistics (2018), about 21% of public schools reported serious violent incidents occurred among students during school hours. These statistics underscore the urgency of implementing clear guidelines on how students can protect themselves without fear of unjust punishment.

We urge you to support this petition and help create safer learning environments where every student's right to defend themselves is respected and protected while preventing any misuse of this right.
