Why this petition matters

Started by Yolanda Kaye

In line with section 18 of the Traffic Management Act 2004, we would like to request a review of the parking scheme on Weymouth road in Frome. This includes the use of pay to park meters and the introduction of resident parking permits.

The implications of this scheme are highly concerning and will negatively impact not only Weymouth road residents, but also residents in surrounding streets (namely Catherine street), businesses' on Catherine street & Badcox; and local people visiting Victoria Park area.

We object for the following reasons:

1)   The residents and business's of Catherine Street have not been considered in the implications of the Weymouth road parking scheme.

All  of the already limited parking on Catherine street is currently restricted. This parking is shared not only between the many residents and business employees of the road; but also passing trade from the Artisan Pub, Lottes bar and Restaurant, Cayford Butchers, The Kingfisher takeaway and Village Spice takeaway/restaurant. This means that during most of the day and evening, the area is dangerously crammed with cars, vans and delivery lorries,  forcing residents to have to use the unrestricted portion of Weymouth rd to park their vehicles. When Weymouth road parking scheme is instated, there will be almost nowhere for residents of Catherine street to park anymore, therefore pushing the problem of on-road parking into further adjoining areas. With Somerset rd having a similar scheme with permit parking and all of Christchurch street West being restricted, there will be  little to no areas close-by for the majority of Catherine street residents to park. We believe there is a lack of consideration for the many residents and users of this Street in the councils current plans and as yet, no idea for resolution.

2) The only people to be offered permits are residents of Weymouth road, where an overwhelming majority of the properties already have access to off-road parking in the form of drives or garages. This means that a handful of advantaged residents will have the opportunity to purchase additional on road parking spaces outside their properties as an addition to their off road parking. This will not only displace other residents of Weymouth rd, but also residents of Catherine street who are in greater need of on-road parking due to their lack of both off road and unrestricted areas to park.

3)  Victoria park is a free community space that is used by large numbers of locals and their families. Parking meters and permit parking along both Weymouth rd and adjoining  Somerset road will again mean that veichles of people using this space will be forced to park in scarce other areas, pushing the traffic problem further out and possibly preventing  people from being able to use  the space altogether.

Given these points, we believe that the appropriateness of the council's current parking scheme is questionable and should be withdrawn and reconsidered.
