Why this petition matters

Started by Simon Balsnes

The aquaculture industry has to reduce it's environmental impact. Until they do we are boycotting farmed salmon.

Why boycott?

o   Salmon lice is a parasitic creature which thrives in the cramped cages used in aquaculture. It leeches on the skin of the salmon, causing illness and death. The parasite spreads to wild fish and causes widespread environmental damage.

o   Millions of salmon die every year because of the appalling conditions in the cages. According the Norwegian veterinarian institute, 54 million salmon died in cages in 2021.

o   Norwegian wild salmon has become endangered because of the impacts of the aquaculture industry.

o   Farmed salmon is fed large amounts of soy-based fodder, and is regularly administered medicine to combat parasites and disease. The medicine inadvertently kills of wild shrimp and shellfish. residual fodder and fish excrement causes over-fertilization of the local marine ecosystems.

The solution is for the aquaculture industry to employ closed containment techniques. Solutions which create a barrier between the farmed salmon and wild fish, limiting the environmental damage.

However, the industry has dragged it's feet in employing this technology, as it is slightly more expensive than traditional open cage aquaculture. A lack of regulations from the Norwegian government has let the industry massively expand without proper environmental standards.

The industry continuously works against regulation and conducts misinformation campaigns about its impact. Last year, when the Norwegian wild salmon was designated as endangered industry representatives dismissed the research as "opinionizing".

It is time to start a transition into a more sustainable mode of fish farming.

Our demand

The Norwegian government or the aquaculture industry itself implements a plan for all companies in Norway having transitioned to a closed contamination system in at least 50% of their sites.
