Why this petition matters

Started by YASunidos .

The Tagaeri and Taromenane are the last two Indigenous peoples in voluntary isolation in Ecuador. They live in the jungle without contact with the greater Western society: they have no internet, no technological devices and their survival depends on the jungle. Now the area where they live is being threatened by extractive activities, which goes against the Ecuadorian Constitution.

With your signature you will help us to ensure that the Inter-American Court on Human Rights (IACHR), the highest judicial body in the region, demands that Ecuador respect the rights of isolated peoples.

The isolated Indigenous peoples of Ecuador live in Yasuní National Park, one of the most biodiverse places in the world. In this area there are some oil fields and cedar trees, whose timber is in great demand. This has caused Yasuní to be threatened by oil and timber activity.

Ecuador's Constitution recognizes isolated Indigenous peoples and determines that all extractive activities are prohibited in their territories. However, the Ecuadorian state has not guaranteed this right and, on the contrary, has promoted oil extraction in Yasuní and has not taken effective measures to control timber extraction in the area.

The advancement of oil and timber extractivism, together with the ineffectiveness of the Ecuadorian government, is affecting the lives of these peoples. There have already been more than three massacres of isolated groups in the area.

Other countries such as Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Paraguay, Peru and Venezuela are also inhabited by isolated Indigenous peoples. If the judgment of the IACHR is favorable, it could set important precedents for the protection of these peoples throughout the region.

Today, by signing this petition, you can help the isolated peoples of Ecuador and the entire region.
