Why this petition matters

Started by Paul Bridges

The original name of Cadillac Mountain was "Wapuwoc", a Wabanaki word meaning White Mountain of First Light. The mountain was known as Green Mountain at least by 1860 - maybe earlier, and the name was changed to Cadillac Mountain in 1918 - to honor a French explorer, Antoine de la Mothe, who fabricated his own "title" as the "Sire of Cadillac".

Rather than continuing to honor a person who had an insignificant role in the European discovery of Mount Desert Island, and falsely made up his title to lead people to believe he was nobility, the mountain's original indigenous name, Wapuwoc, should be restored.

The name Wapuwoc has incredible historic significance to the Wabanaki native people who were here centuries before European settlement, and still has present-day significance as the first place sunlight hits the United States of America for part of the year.

Let's give the mountain it's name back - and honor the indigenous people who first settled here.
