Why this petition matters

Started by NNCEE

Child employment legislation was last reviewed back in 2000 and still the  legislation that governs child employment dates back to 1920 and 1933,  since this time there have been many changes in the employment market, the introduction of Sunday trading is just one, now the National Network for Children in Employment and Entertainment (NNCEE) is calling for the nature of the work that they can undertake and the hours they can work to be reviewed and brought up to date.

Any child aged between 13-16 years working part time whilst still at compulsory school needs a permit, available free from the local authority where the business is based. Currently a young person can only work for two hours on any school day and either 5 or 8 hours depending on their age on a Saturday but they can only work for 2 hours on a Sunday which limits the opportunities for young people. Young people must not work before 7am or after 7pm on any day.

The NNCEE want every child to have the opportunity to work in a safe environment.  Given the impact of Covid on the employment market we are very aware that young people are negatively impacted by unemployment which is why it is so important we support young people when they are ready to start work safely. The NNCEE on behalf of young people are calling on the government to consider allowing greater flexibility so that a young person can work on either a Saturday or a Sunday for 5- 8 hours depending on their age  (but not both).  We  feel it is important that children have one day off work at the weekend so that their school work and access to sport and leisure activities do not suffer.
