Why this petition matters

Started by Philip Ajibade

For centuries, child marriage has been a major that has threatened the social and economic health of less developed nations, this especially in Nigeria where Federal laws and customs have been lax in preventing this devastating social behavior.

According to recent reports by UNICEF, 36 per cent of girls are married before the age 18, and 10 per cent of girls are married before age 15. This is even more prevalent in West and Central Africa where the figure is up to 41 percent, meaning that four out of ten girls and young women - nearly 60 million - were married before the age of 18.

Despite the successes in recent years, the numbers of girls who are fated to this social disaster is still increasing. We therefore need to raise our voices against child marriages and any culture that supports any practices that
threatens girls’ lives and health, and limits their future prospects.

To change this, we must accelerate our actions to end child marriage. Sign this petition to support the education of the girl child instead of making them an economic liability.

Let’s end child marriage today.
