As a journalist who has reported about Athens and UGA for over two decades, I have been deeply affected by the tragic events of February 22, 2024, when Laken Riley was brutally murdered while running near Lake Herrick, a place that is meant for peace and tranquility.

To honor Laken’s memory and raise awareness about safety on campus, we propose renaming Lake Harrick to "Lake Riley". 

This change will serve as a constant reminder to prioritize safety measures within the university premises. It will also ensure that Laken's legacy lives on within the University of Georgia community.
