Why this petition matters

Started by Root Local

40% of all edible food produced in the United States is wasted. In Fulton and Dekalb counties alone, over 125,000 tons of food ends up in landfills. This is a big issue for our community’s social, economic, and environmental wellbeing and resilience!

By signing this petition, your voice will join the call to urge local changemakers across our metro area to reduce wasted food. Here are some possible solutions to create change:

  • Mandate commercial food businesses to partner with food recovery organizations to save edible food.
  • Provide a streamlined process to start community and/or commercial composting.
  • Advocate that all other organic discards should be diverted to be composted
  • Amending the allowable land-use section of zoning codes to include a definition of composting facilities.
