Why this petition matters

One of our City’s most precious landmarks – the Castro Theatre – is under siege.

The Castro Theatre Conservancy [CTC] stands for maintaining the landmark Castro Theatre as San Francisco’s preeminent movie palace and iconic LGBTQ+ resource. Please join us in advocating that the Castro Theatre not be reconfigured in ways that would undermine film presentation or price out LGBTQ+ events or the City’s many independent film festivals that call the Castro home.

San Francisco has the most vibrant film culture in the country and the Castro is the historic soul of that vibrancy. There are numerous examples of successful multi-use auditoriums with traditional movie seating that host concerts, dance, theater, and film.

Some of these important features and more have been highlighted in an upcoming expanded City landmark designation, submitted by District 8 Supervisor Rafael Mandelman. However, the permanent orchestra seating is not included as a character-defining feature of the theater. It is critical that the landmark designation be modified to include this essential, integral part of the Castro Theatre.

San Francisco has many chairless, flat-floored venues for live music but only one auditorium that can present film to large audiences - the Castro Theatre!

We invite you to join us and supporters from San Francisco and beyond working to guarantee the preservation of the Castro Theatre, inside and out!
