Why this petition matters

Let's convince Governor Lamont that he should direct DOT to change the lighting on the Pearl Harbor Memorial (aka the Q) Bridge to blue and yellow, to show the state's solidarity with the Ukrainian people, and that it should remain lit for the duration of Putin's war, an unprovoked and unjustified aggression against Ukraine.

Inquiries to the Governor's office of "constituent services" have been met with statements that have varied with each inquiry, but all claim that the Governor's hands are tied, either due to DOT's policy, or, most recently, that DOT cannot do this because they are limited by the federal government, which ostensibly permits only the colors red, white, blue, and green, though the contact person at the Governor's office was unable or unwilling to give any further information on that policy. DOT's policy states that they are "committed to presenting the public with an attractive, year-round visual experience, while preserving the solemnity and dignity of the bridge’s memorial functions. To that end, we are limiting the bridge’s special lighting displays to occasions and lighting combinations consistent with the memorial aspects of the Bridge: Independence Day, Memorial Day, Veterans Day, 9/11 Remembrance Day, and Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day."
But they have deviated from this schedule in the past: it was lit green for St. Patrick's Day in 2017, and more recently red in honor of health care workers during the pandemic.

More importantly, current events and exigencies cry out for this; the bridge's purported "memorial functions" should go beyond "presenting the public with an attractive, year-round visual experience," and recognize that using "the bridge’s special lighting displays" to express solidarity with Ukraine certainly does represent an occasion "consistent with the memorial aspects of the Bridge." Furthermore, it would serve as a nightly reminder that despite Putin's reckless and unconscionable aggression, Ukrainians are fighting, literally, for their lives, and that the free world stands with them.
