Why this petition matters

Started by David McKnight

As we approach the 2030 ban on new petrol and diesel cars and continue to encourage the uptake of electric vehicles, we need to overcome any real concerns and problems that act as a barrier to the uptake of plug in electric cars.

The biggest concern in the UK for people resistant to making the change is access to electric vehicle charging points, particularly for people who will rely on on-street charge points.

Although there is huge innovation and investment in rolling out on-street charging, there is one ongoing problem that needs to be urgently addressed. Non-plug in vehicles blocking access to charge points is an issue that has plagued electric vehicle drivers for years and is something that needs urgent action to address.

Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) vehicles are not sufficiently discouraged from blocking charge points (known as Icing) and this is unlikely to change unless action is taken to penalise drivers of ICE vehicles who wilfully continue to block charge points. We believe we have a workable solution that will both discourage icing of electric charge points and will give greater confidence to the general public to switch to an electric vehicle sooner.

At EVision Electric Vehicles, we would like to see the introduction of green or double green lines in front of on-street electric charge points with penalties comparable to those of parking on double yellow lines.

We believe that the outcome of this proposal would be greater accessibility to charge points for plug in cars, greater confidence from the public in being able to access electric vehicle charge points, a quicker take-up of electric vehicles before the 2030 ban comes into force, and a greener and healthier environment for everyone in the United Kingdom.
