Why this petition matters

Feeding on demand means following a baby’s cues of hunger to breastfeed. The regular skin-to-skin regulates the baby’s temperature, blood glucose and reduces cortisol, the stress hormone. It also ensures the baby is satiated, leading to a calmer and happier bond with his/her mom.

However, this is a hard rule to follow, specifically in public. In India, breastfeeding in the open is still not accepted. And every time a mother is stared at, taunted, or can’t find a private place to feed, a baby and mom’s fundamental rights – to privacy, to dignity, to life – are being snatched away.

Here’s how we can bring about a change:

  • Make breastfeeding a fundamental right for lactating moms and infants, by including it in Article 21 (right to protection of life) of the Indian Constitution.
  • Make every Indian woman aware of her rights through targeted and PSA communication.
  • Public places, including but not limited to restaurants, malls, parks, transport hubs, IT parks to include ‘breastfeeding allowed’ signage outside.
  • Public places to be held responsible for patrons making a mother feel uncomfortable while breastfeeding.
  • Wherever possible, public places to include sanitized spaces with comfortable chairs for mothers to feed.
  • Mandatory sensitivity training to be provided to employees in workspaces and those managing public places.
