Why this petition matters

Started by Casey Bockol

Recently, in my school, they ruled that students were not allowed to use backpacks, bags, or any item designed for carrying items.
They did this because recently, a student was caught with a vape in their backpack.
While the intention behind the rule is good, most people would more likely hide vapes or illegal substances on their person, rather than carrying it in their backpack, so this ruling, for the most part, simply causes inconvenience to other students.
This is a massive problem for many students, considering the general inconvenience of having to rush up and down stairs to reach you locker, and then having to run back to your class, which could be three floors away, and for people with things inhibiting movement, such as crutches, casts, chronic pain, or disabilities, and this rule could make it even more difficult for them.
Being late for class can garner you a level one, a less severe punishment that doesn't go on your school record.
But if late enough, one could get a level two, which does go on school records, and could even damage someone's future, or which schools they could get into, and many other things.
Some other problems this rule can present are for those with allergies, asthma, or other similar things.
Without a backpack or bag to carry any life saving medication, students with allergies or asthma may feel compelled to leave them in their locker, which in some situations, may even prove fatal.
That, as well as for the girls in our school, one thing is that if a girl were to get their period, they wouldn't be able to carry pads, and the pads provided in bathrooms are thin and could pose as possible allergens to some.
Combine that with restrictive times for going to the bathroom, it could easily turn into a problem.
Most girls would also be apprehensive towards bringing their own pads because most girls pockets aren't well equipped for carrying things, and due to general stigma around periods, it could feel embarrassing or even shameful to walk around with a pad hanging from their pocket, and as earlier mentioned, no one is allowed any type of bag to carry anything, including necessities like sanitation products.
While the school year is almost over, if this rule isn't revoked, it could still be in action the next school year, still negatively impacting people.

In conclusion, this is a rule, that while well intentioned, should be reconsidered, as the consequences can range from discomfort to, in worst possible situations, even death.
With your signature, this rule could be revoked.
