Why this petition matters

Started by Leah Sanchez

Social media has many protections for marginalized communities. TikTok is currently one of the most popular social media apps and as it is largely video-based, discriminatory behavior is prevalent.

TikTok includes protections against Harassment or Bullying, among many other things. Harassment or Bullying is defined as prohibiting "content that seeks to intimidate, embarrass, or upset others" and "threats of violence or sexual assault".

Most fat people who use the TikTok app are flooded with hateful, grotesque harassment on the basis of size discrimination. Myself and all of my fat colleagues are greeted every day with comments gleefully predicting our early death, among strings of many other biting, harassing comments. To our disdain, upon reporting to TikTok, there are never violations found in their comments. Whether it is a comment calling us whales, ogres, slobs, or again, wishing us dead: it is allowed.

Sometimes the harassment is more casual. Agreement with fatphobic statements, such as "she would look better thin" or "you'd look great if you lost 100 pounds" are never successfully reported. Videos from fat creators are taken down and not reinstated due to "nudity" or "sexual content" when we are simply wearing a crop top, while our thin counterparts successfully post wearing micro bikinis.

All of this behavior (and more) leads to intense shame and an unsafe climate for bigger bodies. If TikTok is truly against harassment and bullying, it WILL expand its reporting claims to include discrimination on the basis of size. If enough people see, sign, and share this petition, TikTok can be a leader in the future of body neutrality, paving the path for other social platforms to do the same. It is necessary to protect people of all body sizes because all our voices matter, and we deserve to be treated as valued contributors in the social space.
