Why this petition matters

Founder and organizer for 32, years, Yeharerwerk (YeEthiopiawerk) Gashaw’s purpose is to decolonize the mind of the African people by utilization of አማሪክ ኢትዮፒክ-(ግዕዝ) (Amaric-Geʽeza-Ethiopic) the indigenous African Alphabet, as PanAfricanisim Continental Writing System:: Ethiopia and its language Amaric, has never been colonized.

For 32 years campaigning, still persevered (continued)  to make it happen uninterruptedly, even for a day.

We, the Pan Africanist activists, diaspora and Africans located in the homeland are asking to register Amharic አማርኛ, the official language of Ethiopia, among the official languages of the African Union. In order to continue to foster unity of our nations, we need representation of the African people within this union. We acknowledge that the all-encompassing statement "and any other African language," follows the AU's statement of its primary 5 languages, but that is not enough. The history of imperialism in Africa has often swept over our languages and strong heritage. If we do not give value to our native tongues, who will? As such, we call for the AU to take a stand to acknowledge and lift up the people it serves by giving honor and significance to the native tongues of the land. We Africans don't need Latin to write our languages.

We call for አማርኛ-Amaric to be added as soon as possible because the Ethiopian nation has been a symbol of freedom for the African people on the Continent and diaspora since the reign of Emperor Minilik II and Emperor Haile Selassie The First. Ethiopic-Amaric, is the national and official language of Ethiopian Government, public schools and the majority of the Ethiopian people. It is the written language among Ethiopian’s 200 languages and 82 ethnic groups (115,629,543 people) that is read, written and spoken. In addition, it is electronically written and accessible due to the Ethiopic (Ethiopian) software, just as the other alphabets currently being utilized by the AU.

This campaign was first started by Yeharerwerk Gashaw, in 1989, Dallas,Texas. And brought to the attention of the AU, starting during time the union was still called the Organization of African Unity (OAU). The proposal was presented along with the "War Against Drugs In Africa" And "Abolish Separatists In Africa ",by Yeharerwerk Gashaw, the First Ethiopian International Model, Cover Girl and Actress, Human Rights, Pan Africanist, Political Activist, at the AU’S Headquarter on August 30, 1990. in Addis Abeba, Ethiopia at an official meeting with the then Secretary General of the OAU, Dr. Salim Ahmed Salim, and in the presence of the Ethiopian and OAU Press (article by Ethiopian Herald attached below). It has been a long time coming, and it is the time for change to occur.

”The campaign, the  Organization of African Unity, OAU, now the African Union, AU makes Amaric Ethiopian National Language Alphabet one of its official languages, began in 1989, by its founder Yehararwork (YeEthiopiawerk) Gashaw. And since then, she has persevered (continued) her campaign to make it happen uninterruptedly, even for a day.

In 1990, she met and
introduced her request and campaign to the African leaders such as Nelson Mandela, Marshal, Mobutu Sese Seko, Col. Mengistu Hailemariam, Omar Bongo, Gen. Babangida, Félix Houphouët-Boigny, Daniel Arap Moi, Julius Nyerere, and Robert Mugabe, individually and to the Organization of African Unity, Secretary General Dr. Salim Ahmed Salim at thé OAU now AU headquarter in Addis Abeba, Ethiopia. And at the end of their  meeting Yeharerwerk Gashaw, was honderd and named “Our Ambassador In Dallas” by Dr. Salim Ahmed Salim (OAU now AU). And since then, she has persevered (continued) her campaign to make it uninterrupted, even one day.

When a separatist Tigray People Liberation Front, Meles Zenawi came to power, in 1991, he protested against her campaign and sabotage AU Make the Ethiopian National Language (Alphabet), AU’s working language instead he wanted his ethnic minority language to become AU’s working language. Meles Zenawi, pressured the African Union (AU) up to his death. After Meles's death, the Seyum Mesfen, Sebhat Nega, carried on with their comrades. Despite, since then, she has persevered (continued) her campaign to make it uninterrupted, even one day. “

Niamey, March 08, 2018

To his Excellency the President of the Republic of Rwanda Paul Kagamé Current President of the African Union

Subject: Prayer for the protection of Amharic አማርኛ

Excellency, Mr. President of the Republic,

I have the honor to address you, following your recent election at the head of the African Union, to solemnly ask you to register Amharic አማርኛ, the official language of Ethiopia, among the official languages of the African Union. I am not speaking to you by chance and not only because you are today at the head of our prestigious Union, but because I know your commitments for the influence of our cultures and the work that you have carried out in order to to put the Rwanda languages at the center of education and culture ... and we applauded with pride the adoption by the National Assembly of your country of Kinyarwanda and Swahili, as official languages of Rwanda

You are today elected, by your peers, Chairman-in-Office of the AU - which all of Africa is proud of - and you plan to initiate far-reaching reforms - which all of Africa is waiting for… The opportunity is dream to insert my request, because it has its place fully. It is up to us to protect our treasures, we owe this to all of humanity ... We are the custodians of our wealth, we are solely responsible for it and we are accountable to future civilizations. Amharic አማርኛ is written with one of the oldest alphabets in the world, and many of our scripts, our alphabets have already disappeared over time sometimes, by colonial and barbarian invasions often! It is therefore our duty to protect what remains to us, to pass on these legacies. Africa, the cradle of humanity is also the cradle of writing, starting with the hieroglyphics of Napata, Meroe and Ancient Egypt and, no offense to those who, out of a desire to downplay African civilizations or by contempt want to make Africa a continent without history, without culture and without writing, in order to dispossess us of ancestral and millennial achievements, including letters that we have also invented.

If we are not careful, our rare and precious alphabets that have survived today will disappear ... in favor of the void. When the Organization of the African Union was created in 1963 in Addis Ababa, your illustrious predecessors chose, as official languages, certain languages spoken on the continent, namely Arabic, English and French. In 2004, under the leadership of Mr. Konaré, President of the AU Commission, Swahili legitimately entered the very closed club of official languages of the AU, as being the most widely spoken language in Africa throughout the largest. More than fifty years after the birth of the OAU, geopolitics have evolved, people have migrated, states have been born or reconstituted and Amharic est has spread to several countries in Africa and beyond. This idiom which was only spoken in Abyssinia is in full expansion and is now spoken in Sudan, Djibouti, Eritrea, Egypt, Somalia, Israel, the USA, the United Kingdom, Germany etc. etc. … I would like to alert you - if I can allow myself - on the rarity and the preciousness of this alphabet which tends to disappear. I would also like to draw your attention to the fact that the headquarters of the AU is in Ethiopia, where no other language is spoken by the vast majority of the population apart from their own languages and primarily the language official, Amharic አማርኛ. It would be fair, practical, courteous and even elegant to consider their language among those used in the Union. We must be able to communicate with them, we must be able to accompany them in the preservation of this magnificent treasure ...

Today, over 100 million people around the world speak, think and write in Ahmaric አማርኛ. It is the second most widely spoken Semitic language, after Arabic (400 million speakers) and before Hebrew (10 million speakers). Thus, by including Amharic አማርኛ among the official languages of the AU, you would be making a historic decision and highlighting its historical and cultural significance throughout the centuries and since antiquity. I have the support of the African cultural world and even beyond, because this is a world heritage of humanity ... Intellectuals and artists tell me their support and encouraged me to write to you - it is a fight that I have been fighting for many years. Together and for Africa, we are ready to explore this issue further with you. I know you will appreciate our prayers and I hope I can count on you for a favorable outcome. I have the honor, Mr. President of the Republic of Rwanda and President-in-Office of the African Union, to request you to accept the expression of my highest consideration.

Rahmatou KEÏTAVice-President of the Federation of African Workers in France and Europe (FETAFE) .
