Why this petition matters

Started by James Eaden

Sherko Ismail is a long time resident of Inkersall in Chesterfield. Sherko comes originally from the war-torn region of Northern Iraq. In 2003 he fled for his life and sought sanctuary as a refugee in Britain. He arrived penny-less and destitute without speaking a word of English.

18 years later through his own hard work and determination he has made a  successful life for himself and is a credit to his community. He has studied hard, speaks fluent English and three years ago obtained a Computing degree from Sheffield University. Now he runs a successful IT business which has a great reputation amongst his customers here in Chesterfield. Also he has a wide circle of friends and acquaintances and has a family life as an active and engaged step-parent.

Sherko has volunteered in local schools and community groups. He has lived a faultless life in Britain for the past 18 years and has never been in any trouble with the police or legal system. He hasn’t even had a parking ticket!

Sherko has twice been granted ‘leave to remain’ by the Home Office to stay, live, and work in Britain and was even issued with a British travel document allowing him to travel abroad and then return to the UK. However, earlier this year the Home Office told him that he now faces removal from this country where he has built his life, and forcible return to Iraq.

Sherko has nothing left in Iraq to go back to. He has no Iraqi passport or identity papers, and as a member of the minority Kurdish community could face persecution and arrest on arrival in Baghdad.

Sherko’s campaign to stay has the support of a wide range of people in Chesterfield. Over 40 people of standing in our community have provided witness statements to the court supporting Sherko and volunteered to appear as witnesses to support his application for leave to remain.

We believe that Sherko must be allowed to stay and continue to live his life in our community.
