Why this petition matters

Started by Elena Ufimtseva

For over 30 years Treasure Island has been used by all types of users as a recreational destination - windsurfers, kiters, kayakers, SUPs, swimmers, sailors, fisherman, runners, dog walkers and more.

Now it's about to change and turn into a gated community.

Treasure Island entrance and exit will have a toll on top of the Bay Bridge Toll. For East Bay travelers it will be 17 dollars + parking on the island for each visit. The Sailing Club on TI that teaches kids from low income families cannot afford it, the business owners and workers cannot afford it. They should not be the ones who subsidize underutilized ferry transportation for new Luxury Condo owners on the newly built Treasure Island.

This toll violates the State Land Grant that gave TI to the city; it violates the Final EIR that specifies how TI can be developed; it violates the BCDC permit that clearly stipulates that recreational users have free and unrestricted access to the waters at TI; and it violates AB 981 that requires clear benefits to those that pay the toll.

Moreover, the TIMMA will be in charge of changing the toll amount, schedule, and discounts at any time they find fit with no need of public approval. The current tolling policy is vague and not properly thought through. The current tolling policy is vague and not properly thought of.

We need to make sure that this does not happen by letting the SF Board Of Supervisors know that this cannot be approved. They are attempting to push through this change without public input. We need our voices heard before Treasure Island becomes a private playground for the few, instead of an incredible public space that we all can access.

Next meeting where the SF Board of Supervisors will vote on the Treasure Island Toll is on February 15.

EDIT: February 15th meeting is cancelled. Updates will follow with the next one.

Sign this petition so they see that we are against this and we need proper public engagement and accountability.
