Why this petition matters

This petition calls on the Council's Leader - Councillor Linda Taylor, to refer the decision on closing leisure centres in Cornwall to a meaningful vote of all 87 Councillors at a full meeting of Cornwall Council.

Cornwall Council is now Conservative-run and is actively considering not funding four leisure centres, in Falmouth, Launceston, Saltash and Wadebridge together with the hydrotherapy pool in St.Austell. All are at risk of closing permanently.

There are serious implications if this happens, not just for young and old alike enjoying sport and fitness, but for residents' health and well-being.

Leisure Centres are a vital part of any healthy community. As things stand, a final decision on the issue is due to be made at Cabinet on December 15th with only 10 of Cornwall's 87 Councillors having a vote.

Cornwall Council's constitution allows this to happen, but with your help and support the leisure centre closures can be debated by all 87 Councillors.

Council rules say that a petition signed by 5,000 or more residents must be considered by full council, which would give ALL Councillors a chance to have a say and represent you on this issue.

NOTE: This petition has been created by Independent Councillors, who have all pledged to vote to save the leisure centres. However this is NOT about politics. It is about acting in a way that looks and feels democratic on such an important issue. We believe that most Cornwall Councillors (be they Lib Dem, Labour, MK or Green) take the same view. We also know that many Conservatives do too. They should all have a say.
