Why this petition matters

Started by Angela Link

Audubon Park has existed for decades in Memphis as a great asset to the community providing tennis, golf, a treed walking trail and importantly the only serene, natural greenspace with a lake in East Memphis. This greenspace is used by the public for picnics, walking, frisbee, soccer and rugby games and just relaxing and enjoying the beauty of nature.

Only by virtue of reading articles in the Daily Memphian and the Commercial Appeal were Memphians notified that the City of Memphis Parks Dept. has eminent plans (groundbreaking Nov 1) to turn ALL the greenspace at the east end of the park, adjacent to Perkins Ext'd into GOLF HOLES as part of refurbishing and extending the existing Audubon Course.

Despite the Mayor's suggestion that he wants transparency in his administration, there was no public notice to or discussion with the people that use and actually own this area, the taxpayers of Memphis.

Memphis already has 32,184 yards of City-owned golf holes. There is another course less than 2 miles away. There are numerous additional public and private courses, we don't need more golf course.

If we don't stop this destruction our park will be gone FOREVER. They have already marked 23 trees for removal. Time is critical to save our park. Your signature will be delivered to the City Council, Mayor and Parks Dept. to show that they must not take our park for the benefit of the golf-playing few.

Refurbish Audubon Course in it's existing footprint and don't destroy the only natural greenspace in East Memphis!

Attached photo shows the park as it exists today next to the proposed design published by Parks. The red outline is to show the area that will be lost to the new golf holes... all of the green space.
