Why this petition matters

Started by Kath Saunders

I am writing this petition to advocate for the mental health and addicted individuals in our city of Kelowna, BC. As a concerned resident, I strongly believe that we need more than just one public funded detox center to address the pressing needs of our community. With a population of approximately 235,473 people, it is evident that our current resources are insufficient to provide adequate support and services.

This petition holds great personal significance to me as I recently witnessed the tragic death of a homeless man on our streets. The sight of emergency workers removing his lifeless body while leaving behind his blanket for someone else struck me deeply. It reminded me of my own loved one who is currently struggling with homelessness and addiction.

The existing detox center in Kelowna has undoubtedly played a crucial role in helping individuals overcome their addictions. However, its limited capacity often results in long waiting lists and inadequate access for those desperately seeking help. This situation not only puts lives at risk but also places an immense burden on families who are desperate for their loved ones to receive the care they need.

It is encouraging to know that our government has allocated $586 million towards increasing services and support for mental health and addiction issues across Canada. In light of this commitment, I urge you all to join me in advocating for the establishment of a second detox center right here in Kelowna.

By expanding access through another public funded detox center, we can ensure that more individuals receive timely treatment without enduring lengthy waiting periods or resorting solely to prescriptions from outreach doctors. This will not only save lives but also alleviate strain on emergency services by providing appropriate care before situations escalate into crises.

To support this petition's call for action, let us consider some relevant facts about addiction and mental health:

1) According to the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA), substance abuse and mental health issues often coexist, making it crucial to address both simultaneously.
2) The BC Coroners Service reported that in 2020, there were 1,716 overdose deaths in British Columbia alone, highlighting the urgent need for accessible detoxification services.
3) Research conducted by the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) indicates that timely access to detox centers significantly increases the chances of successful recovery.

By signing this petition, you are not only advocating for a second public funded detox center but also standing up for our community's most vulnerable members. Together, we can make a difference and ensure that individuals struggling with addiction receive the support they deserve.

Let us unite as residents of Kelowna and demand an expansion of detox services to save lives and provide hope for a brighter future. Sign this petition today to show your support!

Thank you,
Kathleen
