Why this petition matters

We who use Lake Erie's waters want harmful algae reduced.  Over 20 years of this and that and lots of money, there is little to no progress.  Ohio is key to getting the source of harmful algae reduced, dissolved reactive phosphorus(DRP). And to make matters worse, Ohio is allowing an existing source, untreated land applied manure from concentrated animal feeding operations(CAFO's) to apply more phosphorus than needed and to make matters worse, allowing more concentrated animal feeding operations to locate in the Western Lake Erie waters along with more untreated manure applications.  We need you to let USEPA Region 5 in Chicago know Ohio's plan will not work and ask USEPA to step in. EPA's Region 5 is reviewing OH EPA's flawed Lake Erie algae reduction plan (aka TMDL) and require DRP as the goal for reductions. Please sign this petition asking USEPA Region 5 to reject Ohio's failed plan. Ohio's plan: Fails to target dissolved reactive phosphorus(DRP) which fuels the toxic algae and; and Fails to address the massive amounts of untreated land applied cow, hog and poultry sewage/manure creating runoff to Lake Erie via tiles, ditches and rivers.

USEPA has the option to take over Ohio's Failed Lake Erie Algae Reduction Plan according to a legally agreed to consent decree.  USEPA has until September 30 to decide and if USEPA rejects the plan, USEPA must redo in five months.

Please sign this petition asking USEPA to reject Ohio's failed plan.
