Why this petition matters

Started by Siarzhuk Shaliga

On March 25th, 1918, the Belarusian People's Republic was proclaimed, and the white-red-white flag was established as the official flag of Belarus. After the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991, this same flag became the official symbol of Belarusian independence and freedom. White-red-white flag of Belarus was the flag that President Bill Clinton waived along with the American flag when he visited Belarus in 1994. In today's Belarus, however, this symbol of freedom is forbidden under the regime of dictator Lukashenko. The use of this flag can threaten innocent Belarusians with years in prison.

The current official red-green-white flag is the former flag of the Belarussian Soviet Socialist Republic and was re-established by the dictator Lukashenko in 1995. This flag is a painful reminder of the oppression Belarusians were subjected to during the USSR and severe human rights abuse, persecution, tyranny, and the murders of Belarusian opposition members and civil activists by Lukashenko's regime. Under this official red-green-white flag, Russian missiles are launched from the Belarusian territory to kill innocent Ukrainians.

With this petition, we are appealing to the U.S. Department of State to change the official flag of Belarus to the historical white-red-white flag. Please support the Belarusian people's fight for freedom by showing support for our cause and helping us bring change.
