Why this petition matters

Started by Geoff Grewcock

Geoff Grewcock is a 72yr old man from Nuneaton who set up a wildlife sanctuary in his back garden over 21yrs ago. He used his life savings to start rescuing sick, injured and abandoned wildlife and has to date saved over 96 thousand birds and animals.

About Nuneaton & Warwickshire Wildlife Sanctuary

The sanctuary soon became a registered non-profit charity and a much loved and well used service for all in and around the Warwickshire area. The sanctuary is run by Geoff Grewcock, who works around the clock, 7 days a week and despite his health conditions he never refuses to help wildlife in need. His dedicated team of volunteers work tirelessly alongside him to care for the animals in his sanctuary and this was recognised by being made Best Practice Representatives for the Parliamentary Review in 2020.

The sanctuary provides a completely free service to all emergency services and the council and provides educational talks to schools and community groups. Due to this they are a much loved and respected part of the community which is fiancially supported by donations and Geoffs pension.

Abatement Notice

For 21yrs the sanctuary has operated with no issues being made by the residents close to the sanctuary. By anyone in fact. However, this all changed when a new arrival in the street reported the smell of animals from the sanctuary. The council have sinced issued an Abatement Notice against Geoff for the nuisance of 'Animal Odours'. Not site cleanliness, not feaces or urine, but an animals odour.

We feel that expecting a wildlife sanctuary to stop animals in its care smelling of natural animal odour is completely unachievable and is nothing short of an attempt to cease operation. We are appealing in court, but need your support.

Threat of financial ruin and subsequent closure of charity

According to the conditions set out by Nuneaton & Bedworth Borough Council, if Geoff does not abate the smell of 'Animal Odour' and prohibit it from occuring again he could be hit with a fine of up to £20,000 which will ultimately close the charity. As this notice has been served indefinately, if we lose, Geoff and his volunteers face living with the constant threat of action by the council which could result in Nuneatons losing its wildlife sanctuary. If we win, we can carry on with our passion - saving wildlife and releasing them back into their natural habitat.

Please sign our petition against the issue of this order. Lets stand up for small, independant charities.
