The recent agreement on a UN treaty covering the world's oceans is an important step on the long-term journey towards ocean sustainability.

But urgent short-term action is needed to keep industrial fishing interests from cashing in before the UN treaty takes hold.
 
Currently, governance over the world's oceans is actually under the direct control of seventeen obscure international bodies called “Regional Fisheries Management Organizations" RFMOs - and the big industrial fishing interests are pulling their strings.
 
Many RFMO decisions are being made in private - and some are even made in secret meetings.
 
Urgent action is needed to open up the RFMO process so citizens, labor groups, conservationists, and the media can have the same access as industrial fishing companies.
 
The future of our oceans is at stake.
