This petition has been started in order to demand protection from unfair practices, unequal treatment and retaliation in the workplace for employees, business owners and residents who do business with non-profit organizations contracted with the City of San Diego within the area designated as the Promise Zone.

Specialized training with an accountability system needs to be put in place immediately to prevent employees, business owners, residents and interested parties from being treated unfairly, harassed, abused and/or shut out of opportunities and positions that have been created to support community building within the Promise Zone.

Creation of a mandatory and transparent system where non-compliance is prioritized and dealt with so the integrity and mission of the organizations that have been trusted to serve within the Promise Zone is maintained at all times needs to happen.

Considering the criteria that is used to make up the Promise Zone, it is especially important that attention be brought to the organizations that are providing service within these neighborhoods. The leadership within these organizations should be equipped with the proper training to deal with the factors that 70,000 residents are living with on a day to day basis and held accountable for their actions while in their roles.

Diversity and Inclusion Training with an Accountability System

Without the proper training and accountability system in place to ensure positive outcomes, residents, employees and business owners within the Promise Zone are subject to abuse, harassment and unfair treatment.

If once the organizations receive the training, the leadership demonstrates failure to comply, employees and all interested parties should have a opportunity to express their dissatisfaction and either additional training needs to take place and/or disciplinary action needs to take place to protect the community from additional trauma.

WHAT IS A PROMISE ZONE?

A Federal program designed to pair Federal government partners with local leaders to streamline resources across agencies and deliver comprehensive support to designated Promise Zones.

WHAT AREA OF SAN DIEGO WERE DESIGNATED AS A PROMISE ZONE?

The targeted area encompasses a stretch of San Diego from East Village and Barrio Logan in the west extending to Encanto and Emerald Hills in the east with a current population of over 77,000 residents.

WHY WAS THIS AREA TARGETED?

This zone is characterized by high unemployment, low educational attainment, insufficient access to healthy foods, concentrated poverty, rising crime, high rates of youth unemployment, and the least affordable housing in the nation.
