Why this petition matters

Started by Mikaila Murphy

What are your experiences in social media regarding unfair treatments from the platforms?

In 2022, content creators throughout the world are sharing their crafts online/utilizing social media platforms for full time income. However, this new market lacks the regulation seen throughout other areas of entertainment (music, dance, acting, etc.).

During social media’s rise over the last few years, there have been unfair policies put into place. Most platforms lack regulation from human beings and rely heavily on computer-generated algorithms. We want YOU to share your stories with us to help make a change.

In the United States of America, you are innocent until proven guilty. Current social media algorithms allow for videos that negatively tarnish someone's name (whether truthful or not) to be promoted to the world. This creates circumstances where many creators lose their ability to work with brands/make income. We believe in freedom of speech but there should be base guidelines so platforms cannot strip creators from their careers due to an instance that is not proven to be true. This is the same way it is not ethical to wrongfully fire an employee.

There are plenty of concerns that get brought up involving social media, including the following:

• Removing/banning accounts from the platform without justified reasoning or explanation. Instances vary but often arise from public discourse on the below:
• Body/Weight
• Height
• Cultures
• Stereotypes
• Disabilities
• Scars
• General Appearance
• LGBTQIA+
• Sexual Health and Wellness
• Ie: Discussing anatomy and health
• Withholding final creator fund paychecks when someone is banned
• Violations that get restored, but still count as strikes on your page
• Lack of customer support/service (partnered accounts included)
• Removing monetization before being found guilty of said accusation
• Consistently allowing mature art forms such as twerking, mature dance styles, rapping using cultural terms, cosplay, SFX Makeup, legal activities such as an alcohol review when there is no age restriction on the account, etc.
• Some accounts allow it currently, and others get flagged.
• Defamation

Examples:

Creator A sited that videos of them promoting body positivity were being removed from platforms due to "violations of community guidelines". This creator received no explanation otherwise, being stripped completely of a chance to fix the issue.

Creator B sited a banning for not being old enough to use the platform. The creator was of age according to policies and simply looks young.

Creator C lost their account due to a negative/chaotic comment section. This led to the creator feeling hurt and useless.
