Asbestos cement pipes have been used for water distribution in many parts of the world for decades including in Canada. As the pipes deteriorate and age these pipes can release asbestos fibers into the tap water of Canadians homes who are serviced by these pipes. There is mounting international evidence that ingested asbestos fibers can lead to serious health problems, including different forms of cancer. 

We, the undersigned, demand that all levels of government collaborate to protect public health and take immediate action on the issue of asbestos fibers in water. We join the #asbestosfreewater campaign at www.asbestosfreewater and demand action now. 

Action Items:

Comprehensive Testing: We demand that all water systems serviced by asbestos cement pipes be comprehensively tested for asbestos fibers immediately. This testing should be conducted by accredited laboratories and be made publicly available.

Regulation Changes:  We demand that the Canadian government update regulations on asbestos cement pipes immediately to reflect the latest scientific evidence regarding the dangers of asbestos fibers in water. These regulations should include requirements for regular testing, monitoring, and reporting of asbestos levels in water. 

Education: We demand that the government immediately provide education to the public about the dangers of asbestos fibers in water, including how to reduce exposure and what to do if asbestos fibers are found in their water supply.

Removal of Asbestos Cement Pipes: We demand that Municipal government create a plan for the safe removal and replacement of all asbestos cement pipes in water systems, prioritizing those in high-risk areas and those servicing vulnerable communities.

Funding: We demand that the government allocate sufficient funding to implement the above actions and support affected communities in accessing clean, safe drinking water.

Infrastructure: We further demand that asbestos cement pipes be included in the National Infrastructure Assessment. 

The health of our communities is at stake. The health of future generations is at at stake. It is time for the government to take immediate action to protect public health from the dangers of asbestos fibers in water.
