Why this petition matters

Started by Diandra White

"I can't breathe." -Eric Garner(2014) and George Floyd(2020)

These three words were the last that we, as a nation and worldwide, heard from 2 African-American males who were detained by law enforcement with improper handling and excessive force, resulting in their untimely deaths at the hands of those individuals who took an oath to "Protect and Serve" our communities.

This petition has been designed in order to propose the implementation of a mandatory "I CANT BREATHE" training module to be added to ALL police academy curriculums throughout the United States in order for them to know how it feels to be detained inappropriately and have your air passages blocked.  This module should be integrated into the Taser gun training and "OC"(oleoresin capsicum) better known as pepper spray training. Within taser/pepper spray training recruits are sprayed in the eyes with pepper spray, and also tased, solely for them to understand, as well as feel the effects of the tools provided to them in order to deescalate a situation before it turns violent.

Officers understand what pepper spray/tasing feels like, so in return they aren't afraid of them and are trained on how to maneuver effectively while under the effects of these tools. They DO NOT know what it feels like to have the weight of an individuals knee pressed against their neck, while being handcuffed face down on the ground. Or what it feels like to be held in a choke hold until your last breath as a means of "deescalating" a situation. The result of these acts have killed many individuals within this country...many of which we probably haven't even heard of. This petition is for the known lost as well as the unknown.

THE CHANGE HAS TO START FROM WITHIN. Officers must be held accountable for their actions. If Officers know and feel the effects of this form of overly aggressive detainment it will humble them, bring awareness and moreover allow them to use the proper discretion within casual and intensely heightened situations.

WE ARE TIRED OF LOSING OUR PEOPLE DUE TO INSENSITIVITY, INJUSTICE, AND THE FACADE OF FEAR THAT THIS COUNTRY HAS PLACED ON OUR HEADS.
