I am writing this petition because I need to do something. A dear high school friend and her granddaughter tragically lost their lives at a dangerous intersection in Manteno, IL. Their story is not unique; since December 1, 2023, this intersection has claimed 11 lives, with 54 crashes reported since 2022. This alarming statistic is not just a number but represents real people from this community whose lives were cut short due to inadequate safety measures.

March 28, 2024, Lisa and her 9-year-old granddaughter Weylen were starting on one of their many adventures.  This intersection changed things for so many people. Lisa went through the stop sign and was hit by an F-150. They both passed away due to their injuries.  The word "accident" is defined as an unfortunate incident that happens unexpectedly and unintentionally. I can't help but wonder if better signage or signals could have prevented one of the many "accidents" that have occurred here. My guess is it would have prevented at least one, if not more. 

Local traffic experts have identified the intersection's design and lack of proper traffic control devices as significant contributing factors to these accidents (source: Manteno Traffic Safety Report). The time for change is now. Through this petition, I hope the local and/or state government follows through with the changes that may be in the works or convinces them now is the time for change.

We are calling on the local government and transportation authorities to take immediate action to improve safety at this lethal junction. We demand a comprehensive review of the intersection's design and implementation of necessary changes such as installing traffic lights, improving signage visibility, or any other measures to prevent further loss of life.
