Supermarkets: Stop Selling Dangerous Plastics That Hurt Our Loved Ones

Supermarkets: Stop Selling Dangerous Plastics That Hurt Our Loved Ones
Why this petition matters

We are calling on supermarkets to increase efforts to stop selling the harmful plastics that threaten the health of our loved ones and the environment.
Recently, I learned that 99% of plastics are manufactured by burning fossil fuels. I also learned that many plastics and microplastics, including the ones our foods are packaged in, contain chemicals of concern. Some of these plastic ‘chemicals of concern’ are linked to infertility, miscarriages and certain types of cancers that could affect us and our loved ones including our pets, so…
Why are supermarkets still allowed to sell us all that plastic?
We’ve known for quite a while that burning fossil fuels pollutes our planet and that pollution causes respiratory diseases. Recently, we found out that pollution is linked to dementia, so….
Why is the government allowing the manufacturing and selling of all that plastic?
Only 9% of all plastic is actually recycled. 58% of all plastic is burned - releasing toxins into the air. Eight million pieces of plastic pollution get into the ocean every day and begin to break down into microplastics. It’s why 1-in-3 fish caught for human consumption have harmful microplastics in them.
Will you sign the petition that asks supermarkets to work as hard as possible to reduce plastic in their stores?
Hopefully, The Global Plastic Treaty and The Climate and Nature Bill (CAN Bill) are on the way, but they’ll take time to put into effect. Let’s make sure supermarkets know what we want and need for ourselves and our loved right now!
Dear Supermarkets,
We want you to:
- Offer food refill stations that give us non-plastic alternatives to package our groceries (i.e glass, paper, bamboo)
- Eliminate single-use plastics like plastic-wrapped produce, water bottles, milk bottles, and plastic-packaged meals that we super heat in microwaves that leach chemicals into our food
- Greatly exceed your original Plastic Pact 2021 targets to help make us safe
- Stop supplying and collecting plastic shopping bags that aren't actually recycled but are incinerated.
- Offer inexpensive non-plastic bottles and water-filling stations
Give yourself and all your loved ones the safest options!

*The Plastic Pact 2021 Agreement drove some plastic reduction in supermarkets but it was voluntary. Now we need supermarkets to raise ambitions and help eliminate all the plastics hurting our families.
