Pregnant and Starving: #1MOMis2Many to suffer complications of Hyperemesis Gravidarum
Why this petition matters
No mother should die from Hyperemesis Gravidarum (HG) or its complications, and no pregnancy should be terminated due to inadequate care. HG is a serious, potentially life-threatening disease of pregnancy with a far-reaching impact that can last for the lifetime of mothers and children. HG is not morning sickness!
Sign to make a measurable impact on maternal and child health and help save the lives of mothers and babies!
We propose policy changes to:
- Mandate health professional training on HG.
- Establish standard protocols for treatment.
- Develop nutritional standards for care.
- Fund research on causes, treatment, and recovery.
- Track perinatal deaths and complications.
Pregnant patients with HG deserve:
- Medical providers offering effective diagnosis and treatment, and prevention of complications.
- Comprehensive, effective, compassionate medical care , including nutritional interventions.
- Postpartum screening, treatment, and tracking of short and long-term complications.
- Thiamin (vitamin B1) as standard of care to protect mother and child. Nutrition is a human right.
- Expanded research to find a cure and develop treatment and recovery protocols.
- Standardize perinatal death certificates to include pregnancy status, as well as all pregnancy-related complications and all contributing causes of death.
Windsor (International) Definition: HG is a potentially life-threatening pregnancy disease that may cause weight loss, malnutrition, dehydration, and debility due to severe nausea and/or vomiting, and may cause long-term health issues for mother and baby(ies).
