The students of Pueblo School District 60 are currently facing the negative impact of the current dress code policy. The dress code does not inspire the community confidence District 60 strives for, as mentioned in their vision statement. We need your help, and here are a few reasons why:

Title JIC of the Code of Conduct states, “The Board recognizes that students have a right to express themselves through dress and personal appearance; however, students shall not wear apparel that is deemed disruptive or potentially disruptive to the classroom environment or to the maintenance of a safe and orderly school.” This infers that minors’ bodies are “disruptive” and can cause disorder in a classroom. This not only victimizes students but also shames feminine presenting students. 

Title JICA of the Code of Conduct also states, “All attire should be sized to fit without exposing undergarments, buttocks, stomachs or cleavage.” The incredibly harmful verbiage seen in statements such as the aforementioned does not take into consideration that students’ bodies are changing and that clothing fits everybody differently. 

Title IX of the Education Amendments (1972) prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex in federally funded institutions, which includes and protects Pueblo School District 60, a public school district. When feminine presenting students are pulled out of class for dress code infractions while their masculine counterparts are not, there is a clear case of educational inequity and gender discrimination. Students of a specific gender are missing class time that others are not due to a policy that targets items feminine individuals would typically wear.

This petition is the student body’s way of taking back control over our bodies and what we choose to wear. By signing this petition, you acknowledge the problem and encourage the generation of tomorrow to find our voice.
