During the early morning of 18 December, the Israeli occupation forces arrested Palestinian activist Munther Amira from his home in Aida refugee camp, Bethlehem. Munther is the the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Aida Youth Center, a community-based organisation supporting the children and youth of Aida refugee camp. He is also an activist with the Popular Struggle Coordination Committee (PSCC), a collection of grassroots activists in the West Bank.

Munther was violently taken from his home around 3 in the morning. Israeli soldiers broke down the door of Munther's home, and beat up his younger brother Kareem for over 15 minutes. Kareem is now hospitalised due to the severity of his injuries. Soldiers then badly beat Munther, tied up his sons, and locked his wife and children in a bedroom. Munther was then blindfolded and left on the street for an hour before they took him away to the military base.

This is not the first time Munther has been targeted for his activism. In 2017 he was arrested for participating in a peaceful demonstration demanding the release of then child prisoner Ahed Tamimi. Munther was sentenced to 6 months in prison for “disturbing public order” and “participating in a protest without a permit”.

Since October 7th, the Israeli military has arrested more than 4,450 Palestinians. Innocent Palestinian men, women and children are being locked up simply for being Palestinian or, like Munther, for speaking out against the occupation. They are being tortured and held in unacceptable conditions in overcrowded prisons. We are therefore worried about Munther's wellbeing. 

Munther has committed no crime, and should not be detained.

We demand that he is released immediately from illegitimate detention, so he can return to his family and his important work at Aida Youth Center and the PSCC. 

Tôt le matin du 18 décembre, les forces d’occupation israéliennes ont arrêté le militant palestinien Munther Amira chez lui dans le camp de réfugiés d’Aïda, à Bethléem. Munther est le président du Conseil d’administration du Centre de Jeunes d’Aïda, une organisation locale qui apporte du soutien aux enfants et aux jeunes du camp de réfugiés d’Aïda. Il est aussi engagé dans le Comité de coordination de la résistance populaire (CCRP), un regroupement de militants de base en Cisjordanie.

Munther a été violemment enlevé de chez lui vers 3 heures du matin. Les soldats israéliens ont défoncé la porte de sa maison et frappé son jeune frère, Karim, pendant 15 minutes. Karim est actuellement hospitalisé vu la gravité de ses blessures. Les soldats ont ensuite frappé violemment Munther, attaché ses fils et enfermé sa femme et les enfants dans une chambre. Munther a ensuite eu les yeux bandés et les soldats l’ont laissé une heure dans la rue avant de l’emmener au camp militaire.

Ce n’est pas la première fois que Munther est visé à cause de son travail militant. En 2017 il a été arrêté pour avoir pris part à une manifestation pacifique qui exigeait la libération de la prisonnière Ahed Tamimi, alors une enfant. Munther fut condamné à 6 mois d’emprisonnement pour avoir « troublé l’ordre public » et « participé à une manifestation non autorisée ».

Depuis le 7 octobre, l’armée israélienne a arrêté au moins 4450 Palestinien.ne .s. Des hommes, des femmes et des enfants innocents sont enfermés pour la seule raison qu’ils et elles sont palestinien.ne.s ou, comme Munther, parce qu’ils et elles s’expriment contre l’occupation. Ils et elles sont torturé.e.s et détenu.e.s dans des conditions inacceptables à l’intérieur de prisons surpeuplées. Nous sommes donc inquiets pour la sécurité de Munther.

Munther n’a commis aucun crime et ne devrait pas être en détention.

Nous exigeons sa libération immédiate de cette détention illégale afin qu’il puisse retrouver sa famille et son travail important au Centre de Jeunes d’Aïda et au CCRP.
