JUSTICE FOR JEROD DRAPER - ALL JAIL DEATHS MUST BE INVESTIGATED
JUSTICE FOR JEROD DRAPER - ALL JAIL DEATHS MUST BE INVESTIGATED
Why this petition matters
We demand accountability regarding jail standards across the United States and seek the establishment of a system of mandatory investigation regarding any deaths that happen in jail.
Jerod Draper is one of MANY whose life have been cut short by law enforcement actions with no consequence for the officers responsible for his death. Draper's story was featured in the New York Times early this year.
Jerod Draper, a 40-year-old father in southern Indiana, was arrested during a traffic stop. Clearly suicidal when officers pulled Draper over, he was taken to the hospital first. Once released from the hospital, he was locked in a cell at a county jail. In mental distress and suffering from a substance-abused related crisis, Draper died in that jail cell after officers Tased him 7 times.
We are calling on the Department of Justice (DOJ) to formally investigate Jerod Draper's death at the Harrison County Jail in Indiana. We demand that the investigation be conducted by a DOJ team from outside of the state of Indiana.
Too many families are experiencing what the Draper family is experiencing. We believe that every Arrest-Related Death (ARD) in the U.S. deserves thorough investigation and accountability.
The short film Safe Place tells Draper's story and Journeys in Film's free discussion guide for Safe Place is a powerful tool for engagement around this important topic.
*Please note that Safe Place does include graphic and difficult content, including Draper’s death and violence against him. He is also partially nude in various shots. As such, this film is appropriate for mature audiences.
