Why this petition matters

Started by Katelin Olson

After nearly 100 years as an incredible waterfront recreational property, Camp Barton is in danger of being sold and subdivided! Please help us stop this process!

Tucked away on the west shore of Cayuga Lake in the scenic Finger Lakes, Camp Barton is a 138-acre property that is a unique recreational and environmental resource for the greater Trumansburg community. Generations of Boy Scouts and area residents have learned to swim, boat, hike, explore, and camp at Camp Barton. It contains the outlet for Trumansburg Creek, a critical habitat for wildlife, and is located on a New York State Scenic Byway. Yet this beloved community facility faces a deeply uncertain future, as the Baden-Powell Council needs to divest itself of Camp Barton to meet its ongoing financial and institutional needs.

Members of the Baden-Powell Council reached out to local municipal leaders for help saving the property for public use. The Town of Ulysses, Town of Covert and the Village of Trumansburg have partnered together and recently asked NY Governor Kathy Hochul to earmark funding to purchase this one-of-a-kind property to be managed by the Towns and Village jointly.

**UPDATE: We are delighted to report that NY Assemblymember Dr. Anna R. Kelles, NY Senator Pam Helming, and Tompkins County Legislator Anne Koreman have all expressed their support for saving Camp Barton for everyone!!!**

In addition to protecting sensitive environmental areas, the municipalities want this amazing facility to be open to the public for recreational purposes, including the Ulysses-Trumansburg Summer Camp, sports programs, swimming and hiking at the incredible Fronternac Falls.

Please let Governor Hochul know that this phenomenal property should NOT be subdivided into more private residential properties, but protected and enjoyed by the public for generations to come! Please include your connection to the property in your comments, if possible, especially if you're a NYS resident.

Thank you for helping elevate this important issue, and please share with anyone who might care about Camp Barton!
