Why this petition matters

Started by SAIH (Norwegian Students' and Academics' International Assistance Fund

Protect the people of Myanmar – save their personal data from ending up in the hands of the military junta.

February 15 Telenor will, if not stopped, finalise sale of their Myanmar-business. The buyer is M1 Group, a Lebanese company that collaborates with the Burmese Shwe Byain Phyu Group, which has close ties to the military.

As a consequence of the sale, user data of 18 million people will be transferred to the new owners.

The likelihood of this data to be abused in the junta’s war against the people of Myanmar, is overwhelming.

Since the military coup one year ago, over 1500 people have been killed and more than 8770 have been imprisoned.

As a majority shareholder in Telenor, the Norwegian government must urgently stop the sale.

We respect Telenor’s decision to leave Myanmar under the current military rule, but it is unacceptable that Telenor sells to a company close to the military.

Selling sensitive and private data will put 18 million customers at great risk. We urge Telenor, The Norwegian Government as the majority owner and the Norwegian Parliament to stop the sale unless they can guarantee for their customers’ security.

With this petition, we urge Prime Minister of Norway, Jonas Gahr Støre, Norwegian Minister of Trade and Industry, Jan Christian Vestre and Telenor CEO Sigve Brekke to stop the sale and protect the people of Myanmar.
