Why this petition matters

Started by Sarah Livingstone

So, Europe and the UK are banning petrol and diesel vehicles from the roads in 2030/35.

The EU, following petitioning by BMW, has now said internal combustion engines can stay so long as they run on "clean/green" fuels. The UK hasn't commented.

Batteries, associated equipment, electric motors and the other technologies involved in electric vehicles are extremely complicated, therefore almost impossible to repair, or will be beyond reasonable cost. This means that EV's outside their warranty will become worthless. The thought of buying a used car with a potential battery replacement cost of, in the case of say a Tesla, being around £17,000, means these cars will be scrap long long before the supposed emissions benefits have been reaped.

There is also the financial and environmental cost of mining raw materials such as lithium. There is a finite amount of easily accessible (ie on land) lithium and the cost rises are going to get even more extreme. Lithium has risen in cost over 1000% in the last three years alone. We also have to consider the harmful effects of lithium production and the end of life disposal. Lithium production needs 2,200,000 litres of water for one tonne (enough for 83 Teslas); and it poisons the air and ruins soil.

We also have hydrogen fuel cells - also a very high tech power train construction which also has the same, nigh on impossible, repair/maintenance problems.

The price of new EV/FC cars are already far more expensive than their petrol/diesel alternatives so it makes one wonder if these governments are trying to reduce emissions by having fewer people able to afford cars or motorcycles.

The alternative is a compromise that will take investment to create the required infrastructure, but that happens with any new development.

Internal combustion has been around for a long time and as such is very cheap to manufacture, easy to maintain and very long lasting. Hydrogen is the cleanest fuel that can be used without necessitating expensive add-ons to clean up (petrol/diesel) emissions and will make the vehicles cheap to manufacture, cheap to repair and service with the same skillsets in service centres/garages.

The governments should be encouraging manufacturers to develop hydrogen internal combustion engines for the future, and maybe offering reto fir conversions to older cars. Green hydrogen can be produced using wind/solar farms.

The other major problem with the EU/UK ban is that between them, they account for 6% of the global population. Any tiny benefit to the world will be negated by countries like the USA, China, India etc all still using far dirtier engines and continuing to do do, making citizens of the EU/UK pay unfairly and unnecessarily high personal transport costs.
