Why this petition matters

Started by Julia Caristi

Known as “Codding Farm,” the LeStage property in North Attleboro was designated as a historical site in April of 2009. The property includes an old farmhouse, a community garden, and several acres of grasslands and forest behind it. The areas behind the farmhouse are home to numerous bird species, including the Eastern bluebird, the American Goldfinch, the Downy woodpecker, and the Cooper’s hawk. Many North Attleboro residents speak fondly about the hawk families nesting in the area, which provide incredible bird watching opportunities for town residents. Additionally, many squirrels, rabbits, butterflies, deer, and foxes have built their homes on the property. In the summertime, wildflowers bloom, providing food and shelter for bees. As pollinators, bees play an integral role in the ecosystem. Bees are currently declining in numbers on a global scale as their habitats are destroyed.

The Conservation Committee aims to preserve the open spaces, natural resources, historical sites, and habitats in the town of North Attleboro. However, the Town Council has been proposing ideas for the fate of Codding Farm, which include razing it for a residential area, a memorial park, or athletic fields. Recently, a large portion of the forest and walking trail at Codding Farm was demolished to create more athletic spaces. This demolition not only destroyed habitats for hundreds of species, but also frustrated many local North Attleboro residents that appreciate Codding Farm.

We are seeking support from the people of North Attleboro, the Conservation Committee, and the North Attleboro Town Council to ensure that Codding Farm, as well as the community gardens, the forest, and the grasslands behind it, are left alone. This planet doesn't need more athletic fields. This planet needs to be left alone. The plants, animals, and insects at Codding Farm deserve to thrive in their habitat, and North Attleboro residents are here to protect them.

If the Town Council would truly like to make a change, the only change that we support is tidying up the farmhouse itself to host town meetings, and removing what is left of the barn that burned down many years ago. Other changes may threaten the ecosystem that has been there for generations.

Thank you!
