Why this petition matters

Started by Emma T.

I have created this petition to ensure that the fabled R-rated cut of Dirty Work receives a proper release. This is an important issue for film lovers and fans of the late Norm Macdonald, whose work deserves to be seen as intended. Please sign and share if you support this cause!

In June 1998, a delightfully lowbrow slacker comedy by the name of Dirty Work was quietly released in theaters. The film, directed by Bob Saget, received little advertising and was crushed at the box office by blockbusters such as Godzilla. Despite the lack of financial and critical success, Dirty Work has become a cult classic in years since, with critic Nathan Rabin describing it as "the ironic dumb comedy, the slyly postmodern lowbrow gag-fest that so lustily, nakedly embraces and exposes the machinations and conventions of stupid laffers that it becomes a sort of sublime bit of meta-comedy."

Today, the star and co-writer of Dirty Work, Norm Macdonald, has lost his lengthy private battle with cancer. Even recently, Macdonald, Saget and co-star Artie Lange were considering a sequel. Tragically, that sequel can now never come to fruition. Instead, what I am proposing is that MGM please consider allowing Saget and others involved to restore and release the intended version of Dirty Work. It is widely known that the film was written and shot with an R-rating in mind. What better way is there to honor deceased comedy icon Macdonald than by restoring his artistic vision? By allowing Dirty Work to be seen as it was always meant to be, MGM can provide closure and happiness for Macdonald's legion of fans.
