Why this petition matters
We at The Hoxton Special have put in five years of hard work to build up and establish ourselves as a safe and fun space for watersports lovers and coffee shop goers alike.
We have taken an abandoned lifeguard hut and transformed it into a truly wonderful place for people who like the outdoors in any capacity to come and take part, whether by learning to kitesurf, paddleboard or kayak, taking a yoga session or simply enjoying a cup of tea and staring out to sea.
In order to get this opportunity we had to opt out of a few things that we now find are severely stunting the growth and future of the company.
We had to agree to waiving the rights to:
- Not be allowed to sell any hot food (including soup etc).
- Not be allowed to sell and alcohol.
At first these restrictions seemed to be okay, however as the business grew the problems started to arise.
Our goals:
- Our major goal is to be open all year round so that we can continue to offer great coffee and a great space for watersports lovers to enjoy.
- Our second goal is to offer year round employment for our watersports instructors and baristas.
As we have grown our hardest part has been keeping open in the winter. All of our locals would like us to stay open but without the ability to sell a hot sandwich our passing trade is extremely low.
This in turn means we are forced to close and can no longer employ our staff over the winter months.
We are asking the Council to allow us to remove these restrictions on our lease, so that we can start to operate all year round and offer all of our activities to everyone. This will mean creating at least 3 more full time jobs at The Hoxton Special, it will also mean being able to continue to do what we do by investing more in the business all year round.
With the opening of the cycle path and the Experience Project, Cornwall Council are pushing to keep tourism in the shoulder seasons and we are more than happy to help, but we need something to offer.
By being able to put on a few evening events, sell some toasted sandwiches or something hot and filling for our watersports clients, we would dramatically improve our offering.
