Why this petition matters

Started by Chris Sellors

I, like many others, am passionate about tracing my family tree. However, our efforts are hindered by the current 100-year rule which keeps census records confidential until a century has passed. This means that the 1951 Census for England and Wales will not be be released until 2052 - a date many of us may not live to see. This is particularly poignant as we lost valuable data when the 1931 Census was destroyed in a fire and no census was taken in 1941 due to World War II.

We are therefore calling on our government to reduce this rule from 100 years down to just 80 years. This change would allow us access to crucial information from the mid-20th century that could help fill gaps in our family histories.

Census data is an invaluable resource for genealogists and historians alike; it provides a snapshot of life at a particular time and can reveal fascinating details about our ancestors' lives. By reducing this waiting period, we can ensure more people have access to this rich historical resource within their lifetime.

Let's urge our government representatives to consider this change - not just for ourselves but for future generations who will benefit from having these records available sooner rather than later.

Please sign this petition today if you believe in making history more accessible!
