Why this petition matters

Started by Anna Reger

Since the tragedy in Sandy Hook, an active school shooter has not breached a locked classroom door.  Locked doors remain one of the most valuable assets in protecting our children at school and mitigating the loss of life in the most extreme emergencies. Doors are often left unsecured, and there remains a patchwork of standards and regulations across the United States for school lockdowns and active threat drills.

Locks currently used to secure doors can only be activated by teachers and even authorized personnel. Our children should be able to know exactly how to secure a classroom in the event of an active threat situation. As a parent, imagine receiving this call from your child. They are in a classroom, hiding in the back, and you ask if the door is locked. Imagine hearing the response "I do not know Mom!”?

Our children need an action plan and an easy way to lock the door when the need arises, whether or not there is an adult educator present.  It is time to empower our school children and give them peace of mind when they are in school.

We all know what to do in the event of a fire or fire drill. This system is nationwide and has been proven effective for decades. The world has changed and we need to implement a new standard system nationwide that will protect individuals from active threat situations. This goes beyond schools.

We are proposing:

1. Standardization of lockdown/active threat drills

2. Mandating secondary, ADA-compliant locks that anyone can activate

3. Provide additional mental health resources for all students

Stop this cycle of debate and well wishes, let's take action now. Please sign this petition calling on our Congress to fund better security at our schools and protect students.
