Save Modern Greek at Macquarie University - WE WANT YOUR HELP !

The Greek Herald newspaper, in collaboration with Macquarie University Greek Association (MUGA) are urgently calling on the community to join our cause to SAVE Modern Greek Studies at Macquarie University. 

Macquarie University is considering discontinuing Modern Greek Studies (along with Italian, German, Russian and Croatian).

For years, the rich and vibrant Modern Greek Studies program has been under threat at Macquarie University. Recently, a discussion paper was circulated outlining plans for major changes in a move away from Languages and Cultures to a Discipline of Global Studies.

Modern Greek Studies is more than just a language course; it is a gateway to understanding Greek history, culture, and contributions to the world. By ceasing this program, Macquarie University would be denying current and future generations the opportunity to explore the nuances of Greek literature, art, philosophy, and the profound impact Greek civilisation has had on the development of Western society.

The removal of Modern Greek Studies would also be devastating to the Greek Australian community, which takes immense pride in its cultural heritage. As a vibrant and influential community in Australia, we firmly believe that preserving our cultural identity and language is crucial for fostering a sense of belonging and promoting intercultural understanding among all Australians.

We implore Macquarie University to reconsider its proposed changes and recognise that Modern Greek Studies is a vital part of the university's multicultural fabric. We call upon the university administration to listen to the voices of the community, the students and the scholars who have tirelessly worked to establish and maintain this program.
